FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) April 9, 2009 --
In order to celebrate this momentous occasion, MUST- Manchester United Supporters’ Trust and Bristol City Supporters Trust have joined forces to stage a re-enactment of the tie. In 1909 the match was played within Crystal Palace Park and the Trusts have hired Crystal Palace National Sports Centre (the stadium now occupying the original site) for Friday 24th April 2009.
On this date a match, kicking off at 3.30 pm the same time as the original tie was played, between two teams made up of supporters of each club will take place. The teams will be wearing authentic 1909 style replica kits.
It is anticipated that this will be the first of what could become an annual event helping to reconnect supporters with the FA Cup and to celebrate its rich history. Twenty FA Cup finals were played at the old Crystal Palace stadium, set within the beautiful Crystal Palace Park, between 1895 and 1914. This unique match will truly exemplify the romance of the FA Cup.
As F.A. Chairman Lord Triesman states:
"It is both heartening and reassuring to The FA to see that supporters still value the traditions of this wonderful competition. The FA is delighted to give our full support to the Bristol City Supporters Trust and the Manchester United Supporters Trust in their endeavours to mark so aptly the centennial anniversary of the clubs’ first ever FA Cup Final appearance."
Involvement from supporters of both clubs is encouraged whether that means pulling on the shirt to become Sandy Turnbull or Billy Wedlock, sponsoring the event or one of the players. Anyone interested can contact us through the website of the event www.1909replayed.org or the respective trusts.
Duncan Drasdo, Chief Executive of MUST, said:
“This is a great example of how supporters’ trusts can work to co-ordinate events for supporters. Any fans who want to get involved should contact us.”
Stuart Rogers, Chair of BCST added:
"In 1909 Bristol City were very much on a par with Manchester United as a force in English football and the FA Cup Final marked the peak of that magical era. Bristol City Supporters Trust is proud to celebrate this centenary with our friends from Manchester as our club strives to compete at the highest level of English football in the present day."
