Prolific author, filmmaker and television producer Nelson George will be interviewed live on BlogTalkRadio this Wednesday, April 15 at 6:00 pm EST. Interviewed by host Leontyne Anglin on her popular show “Volunteering is Phenomenal”. The multi-faceted George will discuss his latest work "City Kid: A Writer's Memoir of Ghetto Life and Post-Soul Success.” Listeners can dial in live at (347) 633-9591 or access the show via flash player at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/beyondexp.
“In a marketplace devoid of true depictions of African-American culture, it felt as if I had been invited into the George family living room,” said Anglin. “Nelson George’s down-to-earth style took me back to my own early years. I found myself nodding my head in familiarity as he walked us in and out of the different worlds, grappling with the inner voice that constantly toggles between realism and optimism.”
George is author of six novels and nine nonfiction books on African-American culture, including the Death of Rhythm & Blues and Life and Def, the autobiography of Russell Simmons. He has produced televisions programs for BET, VH1 and the Golden Globe award-winning HBO movie Life Support, which he wrote and directed based on his sister's life, starring Queen Latifah. A lifelong Brooklyn resident, Nelson is executive producer of BET's American Gangster, VH1's Hip Hop Honors, and Chris Rock's Sundance award-winning documentary, Good Hair. He can be seen as host of VH1's travel show Soul Cities.
“I was pleasantly surprised one night upon my daughter’s visit home from college to flip through the channels and stumble upon Soul Cities on VH1. We’re not big television watchers but we are big music and food lovers so the show caught (and kept) our attention. Being the information urchin that I am, jumped online afterwards to read more about the host and was pleasantly surprised to learn of his many other accomplishments. I was really impressed with his journey and knew that his story would be inspiring to others. “I recall getting the word that the interview was confirmed and immediately sent a text to my daughter on campus – pretty much interrupting her in class,” said Anglin.”
"After reading City Kid, I’m even more excited for the opportunity to have our listeners hear directly from such a diverse talent. Many of our listeners are aspiring writers, producers, directors, and actors," said Anglin. "Nelson George is a true example of perseverance despite the circumstances … and a testament of success for multi-tasking geeks and nerds everywhere, present company included.”
