Local Fitness Expert Warns About Risk of Exploding Stability Balls
San José, CA – April 21st, 2009
Becky Williamson, President of lifeSport Fitness (http://www.lifesportfitness.net) and a San Jose personal fitness trainer, sends a warning to the local community regarding a recent recall of over 3 million stability balls. Stability balls are commonly used by exercisers at local gyms and as part of many home-based workouts.
On April 16th, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with EB Brands, announced a voluntary recall of stability balls (also known as physioballs) under the brand names Bally Total Fitness, Everlast, Valeo and Body Fit.
EB Brands has received 47 reports of the balls unexpectedly bursting, with several reports of injuries such as fractures and multiple bruises.
“It’s especially important for home exercisers to be aware of the burst risk of stability balls”, warns Williamson. Williamson lists several ways consumers can lessen the risk of a stability ball bursting at home:
• Inflate the ball according to manufacturer instructions—do NOT over inflate
• Do not bounce excessively on the ball
• Purchase a burst resistant stability ball (which, if punctured, will deflate slowly, decreasing the risk of injury)
Consumers who own one of these balls may contact EB brands (800/624-5671 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET, M-F) to receive a copy of the updated instructions on how to inflate the balls properly.
