Jacksonville, FL, April 22, 2009--The First Coast Tea Party organization (www.firstcoastteaparty.org) announced today that the Taxpayer Tea Party held on April 15th at The Jacksonville Landing was a resounding success. According to the Jacksonville sheriff’s office, approximately 5,000-6,000 people attended to protest the bailouts, debt, pork projects, and wasteful spending rampant in Washington. The Tea Party protests nationwide were also successful; an estimated 1 million Americans participated in at least 1,000 tea parties in all 50 states.[1]

“We have heard hundreds of comments from attendees who thoroughly enjoyed the First Coast rally,” commented Carole McManus, one of the event organizers. “Through speakers and music, we educated, inspired, and encouraged people to get involved in this exciting movement aimed at reclaiming our country.”

According to organizers, one of the main goals of the event was to give ordinary citizens a chance to voice their concerns to Washington politicians. “We believe we are beginning to achieve this goal, because our Washington politicians are already responding,” explained Billie Tucker, another organizer of the event. “It is important to note that this event was just the beginning. We will continue to plan events and other activities that will ensure our voices will continue to be heard.”

The group’s next major event will be a Freedom Rally held on July 4th beginning at 10:00 a.m. The location is undetermined at this time. Numerous smaller activities are also being planned for the next several months. Please visit www.FirstCoastTeaParty.org in the upcoming days for more information.

The following Florida Senator and Florida, South Georgia representatives responded to the First Coast Tea Party: Florida Senator Mel Martinez; Florida Representatives Ander Crenshaw, John Mica, Cliff Stearn; and South Georgia Representative Jack Kingston. Senator Bill Nelson (D) and Representative Corrine Brown (D) were also contacted by First Coast Tea Party, but they did not respond.

“As a conservative, I believe the federal government needs to get its fiscal house in order; government intervention must be targeted and limited. I think that message came through loud and clear at Tea Party events across the nation.” – Senator Mel Martinez (R)

“April 15th is a reality check for every American - government is spending too much, taxing too much and borrowing too much. It’s time for Washington to listen to the American people who have had enough and work toward common sense solutions to get our economy moving again – without raising taxes. I applaud the organizers and participants in today’s Jacksonville Tea Party, and I carry your message through the halls of Congress every day.” – Representative Ander Crenshaw (R)

“Across Florida and the nation, ‘tea parties’ drew thousands in protest of higher taxes, and I congratulate the organizers of the First Coast Tea Party for a very successful event at Jacksonville Landing. Grassroots movements begin in hometowns such as Jacksonville and St. Augustine, and your collective voices have sent a strong message to leaders in Washington…we are taxed enough already. You have my support, and I will carry this message of common sense and fiscal discipline to my colleagues on Capitol Hill.” – Representative John L. Mica (R)

“Through these tea parties, millions of Americans voiced their support for fiscal responsibility and an end to excessive government taxation, spending, and borrowing. They said that we need to see what companies can succeed and allow the others to fail and then sell off their assets and reimburse the taxpayers. I have a strong record on holding the line on government spending and in support of tax relief, and I welcome this national demand for tightening the belt in Washington.” – Representative Cliff Stearn (R)

"If spending was the solution to our problems, our economy would be fixed by now. We need to promote less taxation and a free market. I think Americans are tired of the status quo and that was very evident on the 15th. I pledge to take their message to Washington." – Representative Jack Kingston (R)
