April 22, 2009, Duncansville, PA-- Governor Schwarzenegger will join the recipient of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize, Wangari Maathai, and Shaklee Chairman and CEO Roger Barnett to take part in planting the millionth tree for the Shaklee Corporation's Million Trees - Million Dreams campaign at 1:45 PST today.
The goal of this project, and many others that have preceded it during the company’s 52 year history, is to contribute to making the planet healthier and for providing economic opportunities for millions of people to do well by doing good. Many of the one million trees came from people joining the company under a program that would plant 10 trees for their purchase. The company was able to reach their goal as a direct result of the growth that has been experienced throughout their history, including during the rough economy of the past year.
“I am proud to have a 25 year association with this wonderful company that cares as much as they do about helping people. The one million trees has come to fruition as we all knew it would, and also, during the past year, in these tough economic times, our company has committed to reaching out to 1 million families and offering them the opportunity to create income and essentially have what they want for their lives. It is what we are about.” states Shaklee Independent Distributor Vicki Zerbee.
Also participating in the event today is Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Muta Maathai. Her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace won her the coveted prize and , she was the first woman from Africa to be so honored. Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement where, for nearly thirty years, she has mobilized poor women to plant 30 million trees. Her methods have been adopted by other countries as well.
When the company was founded in 1956, the founder dedicated himself to improving the world we live in. That tradition has continued for over 52 years, from having biodegradable cleaning products long before the current green movement, and many innovative programs and products that improve the health of people and our environment.
The brand believes in healthy communities as well and strongly supports corporate social responsibility. This past year, it was announced that all distributors could take part in a program designed to reach out to one million families who might be interested in improving not only their physical health but their financial health. At the same time that other businesses are having troubles or even closing, this company is growing, and they want to reach out and help others have the same.
