IMF bailout to fund genocide

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) April 22, 2009 -- Sri Lankan Government has applied for $1.9 billion dollars from IMF and the IMF board is to vote on it next couple of days. The war budget last year was $1.6 billion. So the money that is going to be borrowed from IMF is going to be spent on war. In other words, tax payer’s money is going to fund a genocidal war. The IMF mandate is to promote economy not to fund war especially a genocidal war. The Human right watch in a letter to IMF has stated why IMF shouldn’t give the money to SriLanka:

http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2009/03/23/letter-international-monetary-fund-imf-sri-lankas-emergency-support-loan-request.

The human right watch has pointed out to the genocidal war that is being carried out by the SriLankan government. Since January 2009 more than 2,800 civilians have been killed and over 7,000 wounded. This figure was again stated by United Nations. (http://un.org/News/briefings/docs/2009/db090313.doc.htm).Several countries including Canada, United States, UK and India have called for a ceasefire. However, SriLankan government is continuing its killing. Most of the killing has been due to bombing of government designated “safety Zone”. Government has set up camps called “welfare camps” which has been dubbed as detention camp by NGO’s and called “Concentration camps” by Tamils. People are kept in temporary camps that are surrounded by barbed wire. People cannot move freely and are kept away from journalists. Several Tamil welfare groups have alleged harassment by authorities in these detention camps.

The decision would be made within next two weeks. Each government has a percentage of the votes in the IMF. The western countries such as US, Canada, UK, and Germany etc have more than 50%. So if all these countries work together the IMF funding to the SriLankan genocidal war could be stopped. On the other hand general public in all the donor countries will not support this since everyone of them have economic issues and the money that is given to IMF could be put to better use domestically or in another developing country that is going to spend the money to stabilized their economy which will help to stabilized the global economy. Countries and their corresponding vote in IMF:
Australia 1.47
Canada 2.89
France 4.86
Germany 5.88
India 1.89
Italy 3.2
Japan 6.02
Netherlands 2.34
Sweden 1.09
Switzerland 1.57
United Kingdom 4.86
United States 16.79
52.86

United States has laws that prohibit the government from providing aid including through IMF to countries that is carrying out genocidal war. A Tamil organization has filed a lawsuit in District of Columbia to stop it. "Declaratory judgment that a failure of the United States to oppose Sri Lanka’s pending $1.9 billion IMF loan application would constitute a violation of 22 U.S.C. 262d,".
