Where Rubber Meets The Road
Bakersfield, California, April 23. 2009-It is estimated that 2 to 3 billion tires are currently stockpiled in the US. New company, Greenbees is making good use of such rubble.

With more eco-conscience buyers than ever before, Greenbees creators Irene Clancy and Janel Garcia have taken their love of fashion and combined it with a global sense of responsibility to form an eco-friendly shoe line. “Each and every Greenbee shoe is created using a recycled tire as the sole. The fact that these shoes are made in part by taking an existing resource that is discarded and no longer useful out of our environment and use it in a way that creates something new and functional once again is a great step in making people aware of how practical recycling really is,” says Janel.

Greenbees launched in February 2009 with their maiden sandal, the “Estephania”, a Grecian designed shoe that at the time, launched in only 1 color-tan. Since it’s inception mere months ago, Greenbees quickly found themselves expanding their designs due to demand. “Our buyers were continually asking what other styles and colors were available and we knew that we had to meet up to their requests,” says Janel, “and we’re glad that we did.” In addition to their “Estephania” sandal, Greenbees has added 3 other styles to their line up: the gladiator inspired sandal “Emilia”, the “Thencha” boot, which fuses the classic styling of an equestrian boot with the rugged comfort of a cowboy boot, and the “Emma” boot which is a shorter version of the former.

Each Greenbee shoe is artisan made using only the finest full grain leather available, pure and treated only using a formaldehyde free method and sourced from local materials. “It was important for us to design a shoe that is not only eco-conscience, but fashion-conscience as well,” states Irene. “For every one tire that sits in our landfills, serving no purpose but to collect water and serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other disease spreading insects, Greenbees is able to produce four pairs of shoes,” continues Irene “We wanted people to know, that it doesn’t take much to make a difference. It can be as simple as planting a tree or wearing a great pair of shoes. It’s easy to become a part of something bigger.”
