60 Days to Start a Business? An Entrepreneur’s Challenge
In an unforgiving economy where the unemployment rate keeps getting higher, what do you do if you need to support your family? In a race against time, one entrepreneur is about to find out.

After reading about how hundreds of people are currently competing for $10 per-hour jobs at local fast food restaurants, David Mickelson has seen enough of this economy’s effects. “I’ve been involved in small business, including start-ups, for most of my working life, so I’ve been fortunate to acquire knowledge from some amazing people and experience success. My colleagues suggested that I use some of this knowledge and do something to help people out.” And so he has. He has written a book called the Entrepreneur Field Manual , which is designed to act like a business coach giving people the steps and encouragement to start a business quickly and profitably.
But David didn’t stop there.
“I know the principles of the book are solid but I’m a firm believer in practicing what you preach.” The practice he refers to comes in the form of the “Money from Nothing” challenge. The “Money from Nothing” challenge is based on answering one question: Is it possible to build a successful business, (making $3,000 per month), in 60 days or less?
Here are the ground rules for the challenge:
1. He will have a maximum of $500 for the business start up.
2. He will have 60 days to reach the goal.
3. He will work the business in a part-time status - no more than 4 hours a day can be spent working in the business.
4. He must choose an industry where you have no prior experience.
5. The quality of the product or service must exceed an average user approval rating of 9 (based on 1-10 grading scale).
6. The business must have potential to expand to earn at least $10,000 per month in 12 months and $25,000 per month within 24 months.
Why such difficult conditions to work under? “My belief was that I needed to make the challenge as realistic as possible. In tough times, time and money become precious commodities. Ultimately, my goal is to show people that if you follow the right steps then there is absolutely no reason anyone can’t be successful, under any conditions.”
David has the following advice for people out there that are considering starting a business: “The key to starting a business is to learn the basic steps on how to do it. Don’t strive for perfection in the beginning; instead, simply focus on getting started. You will make mistakes but with consistent effort it’s amazing what you can accomplish.”
