Newport News, VA May 5, 2009 – Menchville Baptist Church, SEEDS of Grace home school co-op and Intern Master Gardener Amy Oliver plant a vegetable garden on the grounds of Menchville Baptist Church to supply fresh vegetables to the Food Pantry at Chestnut Memorial Methodist Church. The food pantry provides emergency food and USDA food to less fortunate members of the community. Oliver is instructing the children and their families on how to plant, tend and harvest a vegetable garden. The families of the SEEDS home school co-op will supply the labor throughout the summer and fall months, while supplementing their education with hands on learning.
Menchville Baptist Church constructed a greenhouse in conjunction with a Mission Trip to Mexico to build greenhouses. The prototype greenhouse will be used to extend the growing season providing fresh vegetables into the fall/early winter months.
SEEDS of Grace Home School Co-op is a ministry of Menchville Baptist church currently serving over 100 home schooled children and their families. The co-op meets weekly on Tuesday afternoons providing supplement classes and activities for home school families.
The greenhouse, originally constructed as a prototype of the greenhouses that are to be built in Central Mexico, was the catalyst for the vegetable garden. The idea was to grow vegetables in the greenhouse. Starting too late in the spring to utilize the greenhouse as a greenhouse, it has been modified to use this summer. Later this summer the greenhouse will be restored and used this fall to extend the growing season.
