Are you really going to keep looking for a job on the internet? by Nick D'Uva
Job search strategies that worked 10 years ago are no longer effective.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 6, 2009 --
Ten years ago your methods would have yielded plenty of opportunity in the search for employment. It was pretty much an employees market: headhunters would call asking you to switch to a new company, friends knew of situations where their company wanted someone with your talents, and the internet job boards swelled with positions (not only that fact reigned in 1999, but the positions posted on the internet were, for the most part, real employment positions.
Today, the internet job boards have become the dumping grounds for EEOC compliance notices, work-at-home or "business opportunity" scams, multi-level marketing (a.k.a., network marketing) hook ads, insurance companies ads for new agents, or entry level positions paying minimum wage (worse still are the 1099 positions paying no base salary but promising $100k per year in earnings).
So, if you are like most folks today shotgunning resumes to every position, frustration is probably ruling the day. You "work" full time now trying to find a "job", firing resume after resume into a blackhole of indifference. Wait, you've had some interviews and came in 2nd place (for the 6th time). Maybe if you just keep firing the resumes, eventually you will win the lottery? Hardly. Using the law of large numbers requires large amounts of time as well. You probably won't live long enough to let that theory play out for you.
The number one question I am asked today is: "How do I get to the decision makers at companies hiring people with my talent?" In this current environment, the key is to utilize all available resources, including, getting professional help, not only in the search but also in strategy preparation for the interviews, and setting the table properly so that you are able to effectively negotiate the right package and longevity of position, instead of using the losing strategies in vogue with so many people. Selling yourself short by taking a lower level position and agreeing to more hours and more responsibility for less pay, is a recipe for career disaster.
Getting the assistance of a professional career firm is the most efficient way of fine tuning your approach, focusing on the right career choices, and shortening the amount of time required in locating the perfect position. You may not want to retain a professional; but, in today's market, having a strong campaign manager can make the difference between frustratingly long periods of unemployment and effectively finding your next excellent career choice.

Here's the important calculation: Take the amount of money you are losing every month you are out of work and multiply the number of months you have been out of work. That amount is what you have lost to date by not getting professional help earlier. Of course, the number grows every month.
My four rules for job seekers are:
1. Get Started
2. Ask for Help
3. Follow Through
4. Don't Quit
