There are not more than seven basic elements - the seven elements are all an artist has to work with. But there are eight principles which can be applied to each of the seven elements.

For example: take the element of shape - "One of my favorites," says Smalley. "A painter can alternate shapes or gradate shapes from one type to another type. By selecting one of the basic three shapes and repeating that shape with variation one can create a lot of interest in a painting. Repeating a similar shape over and over helps to unify the whole painting surface with meaningful parts. This helps to create harmony and balance.

"It takes at least six class sessions to cover all of the variations that are possible. And those who understand these art facts find that they are more likely to recieve recognition in art shows and make more sales," Smalley concludes.
