You are probably wondering what EMR (Electronic Medical records) has to do with ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). From the industries they serve, absolutely nothing. From technology and business perspectives, everything.
Correlation of EMR and ERP – Lessons Learned
Welcome visit Our WebSite:
http://www.octavesolutions.com In the 1980’s, the ERP industry was like the Wild West. You had a multitude of technologies, and that was just for databases i.e. Pick, Information, Flat Files, Binary Libraries and more. Then, the introduction of commercial relational databases started the unprecedented transformation of our institutions that is continuing today. Those ERP companies who did not embrace relational databases were subsequently squashed and purchased for their customer base.
For years there was the big four, aka BOPS (Baan, Oracle, PeopleSoft, SAP). Today, only two of the big four remain leaving behind a trail of shelved solutions, disparate technologies, and orphaned customers.
It takes years to develop a feature rich ERP solution. Once developed, it’s increasingly difficult to “fully” embrace new technologies throughout the ERP solution. Therefore, a lot of the development dollars go into an applications user interface, hence the term, “lipstick on a pig”.
Jump ahead to 2009. The Healthcare IT Stimulus Package which provides incentives to physicians who purchase and effectively utilize EMR, actually requiring physicians to use EMR by 2015 has created another Wild West. The EMR Wild West.
As of today, May 10, 2009, there are over 400 EMR solutions available on the market. 6 months ago, there were only 360. Companies like Google and Microsoft are trying to gain an EMR presence through leveraged technology, relationships and clever marketing campaigns. Even eClinicalWorks has plans to put its solution in Wal-Mart’s.
Lesson number 1 – EMR setup, implementation and training is required. Even if you purchase your EMR solution from Wal-Mart, it is anything from plug and play. All EMR solutions purchased today require setup, implementation and training. Money you may save on the software will definitely be recouped by the EMR provider in services down the road.
Lesson number 2 – There will be mergers and acquisitions. With the rapid growth of the EMR software industry, you will see many mergers and acquisitions. Newer EMR companies surviving on sales will have a tough time in this economy. Many will be purchased for their newer technology they bring to the table.
Lesson number 3 – Larger, more established EMR companies are slower to change embracing newer technology. The more feature rich the solutions gets, the slower it can adapt to new technology. Therefore, there will be a host of add-on’s and interfaces helping to bridge different technologies.
In summary, less is more. Physicians who purchase just what they need without all the hype will receive a faster ROI with less risk. Case in point, Grambling State University selects PrognoCIS for managing student medical records. While PrognoCIS is not as well known as some of the other EMR solutions, after extensive research and review, Grambling State University found PrognoCIS offered just what they needed, using proven viable technology and the easiest to use interface.
Octave Solutions is a PrognoCIS provider, with over 10 years of medical software experience. Choosing a company who can successfully implement and support your EMR solution is as equally important as finding the right solution.
