Los Angeles – With wars raging around the world, millions of people jobless and losing their homes, immigration problems, and education at an all time low, it is not surprising to find coordinators from Youth for Human Rights International taking to the streets to get signatures on petitions to implement the Universal Declaration of Human Rights once and for all. This weekend marked an international petition-signing event around the world where hundreds of thousands of signatures will be gotten.
“Following WW II, all the nations came together in Paris on December 10th 1948 to sign the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” said volunteer Steve Jacobson. “This is such a powerful declaration which states that all human beings have fundamental rights and freedoms and are inherent to all human beings. Unfortunately, even though the declaration was ratified by the United Nations, it is clear that its implementation has not occurred. As humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard said, ‘Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream’ and so with these words we educate youth around the world about their rights.”
“With human right violations occurring daily, it is more important to understand these articles today then ever before in history,” continued Jacobson. “With war, lack of education, homelessness, and mass unemployment scourging society today, these articles lay out obligations of Governments to promote and protect human rights, fundamental freedoms for all. Implementing human rights starts at home and your neighborhood because if it does not occur there than it has no meaning anywhere else.”
Signed petitions from around the world will be taken to a summit in New York at the United Nations Headquarters and presented by youth delegates in order to get the Universal Declaration of Human Rights implemented in full.
