Drug Delivery provides more information about the Swine Flu epidemic
The Swine Flu virus has become a troubling disease that has spread across the globe; we discover exactly what it is and what can be done to stop it.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 15, 2009 --
The recent emergence of the so-called rampant ‘Swine Flu’ virus has the world up in arms, crying out for a swine flu vaccine. The H1N1 virus, as it is now officially called, has broken the mould where common influenza viruses are normally concerned. Pandemic viruses like these will cause the most fatalities in babies and the elderly; however the H1N1 virus is affecting mainly young, healthy individuals. But how is this possible?
The outcome of recent research in Hong Kong suggests that it can be ascribed to ‘cytokine storms’ that are also characteristic of Avian Flu. A cytokine storm can be described as follows: When a host is infected by a virus, the lung cells produce pro-inflammatory molecules (cytokines) due to an auto immune response. In the case of H1N1, this process goes into overdrive, causing an over-reaction that can potentially lead to death. In other words, it is the immune response that claims the sufferer’s life, not the replication of the virus as such.
Although the first reported case of swine influenza in the United States claimed the life of an infant, it is suggested that young children and the elderly may be less susceptible to the virus due to their weaker immune systems. Young, healthy individuals on the other hand have vigorous immune systems that react strongly to viral infections; therefore they may be more likely to be affected by the cytokine storms.
Since the H1N1 virus represents the first noteworthy epidemic in years, speculation has been rife as to its origins. Some of the more extreme theories suggest that the virus must have been created in a laboratory to serve as a biological weapon, much as what was originally said about AIDS. But let’s focus on some facts for a moment.
The American Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC) is on record as recommending Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or Zanamivir (Relenza) to treat and/or prevent infection with the H1N1 virus. These antiviral treatments are available in the form of pills, liquids or inhalers and fight the illness by keeping the virus from replicating in your body.
