Social networking sites such as Twitter.com and Facebook.com do not only provide convenient way of connecting with other people online through direct, friendly adding of new contact and joining social groups. These social networking websites also provide opportunities for people to freely express themselves in the form of blog writing, video sharing, photo-sharing, and other multi-media sharing. Consequently, some individuals and organizations also used these social networking sites to create mini-websites for wide range of purposes. However, some of these purposes include sinister ploys to spread hate messages. This problem has recently been noted by the administrators of the social networking sites. The power of the create invite tools of these social networking sites are now being used by extremists to propagate their message of hatred.
Extremist beliefs and hate messages such as denying the Holocaust are now easily propagated in social networking sites at faster rate. Racist groups and individuals now have found a new medium of propagating their ill doctrines. Ironically, the create invite tools of the social networking sites has also made it easier for the extremists to gain followers and sympathizers. Hate messages and misinformation are now easier to spread in the guise of free expression. However, the administrators of social networking sites have recognized the danger of this type of abusive use of their systems.
Since most of the social networking sites offer free services, they also have the rights to censor and remove all offensive materials posted by users. The freedom of speech or expression is not violated because the social networking sites specifically state in the agreement clause that no offensive or pornographic materials may be posted by the users. Free speech is not an excuse of spreading trash messages in online, privately-owned social networking sites. Free speech is only guaranteed by the constitution in term of speaking criticisms against the government. Using create invite tools of privately-owned social networking sites is an exception of unrestricted freedom of expression.
However, the administrators of social networking sites are finding it difficult to keep pace with the hate-centered mini-websites being created by users. Only few are removed from the sites. Not all are properly censored. Only when there are people who report these offensive messages that the administrators of social networking sites can really take action. The rate of creating new hate mini-sites is actually faster than the rate of removing them. The otherwise benign create invite tools are being used by the extremists to spread their malignant messages.
