United KingdomRe: Gateway Flare Project
Dear Jerry,
Per our earlier conversations, the Gateway Flare project located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, has terminated due to insufficient generation of methane as a result of mine flooding. The compressor was on a constant vacuum and eventually shut down due to the lack of gas. The Gateway Coal Mine Methane (CMM) project commenced in the late 1990’s with the drilling of a borehole into the inactive mine workings. While the borehole could produce a considerable amount of gas, the gas was not of satisfactory quality (high nitrogen content) for the local pipelines and the well was “shut-in”. Foree Oil Company acquired the well and the CMM lease on the mine and commenced development after securing a market for the gas. Foree drilled additional wells and produced gas into a local pipeline. Eventually, however, the pipeline company changed its position on taking “off specification” gas into the system and the wells were shut-in. Subsequently, Foree made arrangements for Guild Engineering to place an Engelhard nitrogen rejection unit on the project. After the unit was installed, the Gateway produced pipeline quality gas into a local pipeline system until, due to excessive amounts of rain, the mine flooded and all but one borehole ceased to produce gas. The Gateway flare project was commenced in 2006. Engineering estimates indicated that the one remaining borehole could produce in excess of 300 mcf of gas per day if produced with a compressor. Due to the current shortages of personnel and materials in the oil and gas industry, the fabrication of the flare and the associated facilities took longer than expected. Operational problems were caused due to the lack of availability of qualified personnel, difficulty in sizing the facility to the relatively small volumes of methane and extended illness ofkey field personnel. Water vapor associated with the gas caused freezing in compressor and pipeline components. Contractors’ incorrect installation of the meter, oil problems with the compressor and construction and materials issues with the flare also caused consternation.
