ESPN.com has reported that NFL team quarterback Brett Favre met with renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews this week to discuss the possibility of shoulder surgery on his throwing arm. Although Favre’s agent vehemently denies it, rumors have been buzzing for weeks about a possible deal between Favre and the NFL team Minnesota Vikings for the upcoming season. Minnesota fans are shaking with excitement at the thought of watching Favre take the field at Lambeau wearing purple and gold, while probably every one else is wondering why this just won’t go away.

Last year with the NFL team New York Jets Favre led the league in interceptions and couldn’t close the deal to get his team into the playoffs; the NFL team Jets finished the last five games of the 2008 season 1-4 and Favre threw a season-crushing interception in the final minutes of a do-or-die game with Miami’s NFL team to shut the door on the Jets post-season hopes. Now, at 40 years old, Favre is supposedly considering a surgery that could put him down until at least the end of July, giving him only a few weeks to rehab himself ready for the 2009 preseason. Whether the rumors prove true or not, you’ve got to wonder what all this speculation is doing to Favre’s legacy. At what point does a hero become a punch line? Sad to say about a guy as genuine as Brett Favre seems, but nobody wants to see a legend who doesn’t know when to hang it up.
