Donny Osmond Supported Children's Literacy at Spread the Word Nevada's 18th School Adoption Ceremony

(Free-Press-Release.com) May 27, 2009 -- Las Vegas, Nevada – “Blazing our own trail to success” is the motto at Dean Petersen Professional Development School, selected as the eighteenth elementary school to receive services from Spread the Word Nevada: Kids to Kids, a nonprofit, children’s literacy organization, made possible by a grant through the NV Energy Foundation. On May 21, over 700 students attended the adoption ceremony – each received a canvas bag and chose five books to start off their own home library collection.

To help celebrate this literary event, Donny Osmond and his son, Joshua, made a special appearance and participated in two assembly skits teaching the students at Dean Petersen that the Las Vegas community supports their educational opportunities. “I never had the opportunity to go to a traditional public school since most of my education was done through the mail. Books were very important to me. This event gave me an opportunity to share the importance of books with my son, Joshua, who is currently a fifth grader, and to have him help support Spread the Word Nevada’s literacy programs,” stated Osmond.

Laurie Hartig, Founder and Program Director, of Spread the Word Nevada, took the students on a magic carpet ride and relayed to attendees that “books are magical…they can take you to far away places and different adventures. Reading is a key to future success.” Other community partners who attended the adoption ceremony included Robert F. Alfaro, Region Superintendant; Greg and Shawna DeSart, GES; Doretha Graham-Easler, NV Energy; Mario Joyner, Nevada State Bank; and Dr. Eva White, Assistant Region Superintendant.
