Press Release on the Conflict in the Niger Delta

Annang Development Congress (ADC) denounces the air bombardment of the Ijaw communities in the Niger Delta by the Nigerian military forces. While there are faults on both sides of the conflict, air bombardment leads to indiscriminate death and uncompensated injuries especially to innocent civilians.

Considering the long history of unresolved differences between the Federal Government and the people of the Niger Delta, the present military engagement sidesteps a necessary non violent and peaceful resolution inevitably needed in the area. Mass bombing is impersonal and kills the most vulnerable members of the society.

We also denounce kidnapping, destruction of oil infrastructure, corruption and all other crimes in the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole. These activities pose an unwelcome threat to the collective peace of the region. There must be another road to bring permanent and lasting peace and sustainable development in the region.

ADC joins others and calls on the Federal Government to open a fair table of dialogue to create a permanent solution to the heart of the Niger Delta friction. A fair, just and equitable share of the resources and development opportunities in the Niger Delta can buy more than air bombardment, kidnapping and destruction of property.

The non sustainable use of violent power on the global scene suggests a necessity for a different way, the use of Smart Power based on dialogue. Force and violence has its limits.

As Niger Deltans, we are willing to work with the government, the multi-national corporations and the local citizens in search of sustainable answers and lasting peace. ADC believes that Smart Power instead of violent power can be used to resolve the chronic Niger Delta problems and bring an end to the violence creating in its wake a peaceful Nigeria for all.

Signed

Dr. Victor Udo, President

Sir P. E. UdoUmoh, Secretary General
