"Algae: The Race for New Oil" NAA workshop June 12 in Orlando offers hands-on learning oppor
Fluid Imaging Technologies, Inc and Millipore Corp. have graciously offered to do on-site analysis of live or preserved algae samples brought to the Orlando workshop by attendees.

"In addition to our stellar line-up of speakers, the National Algae Association Mid-South Chapter is pleased to present our attendees with the unusual opportunity to have their local algae species classified by state-of-the-art analysis systems by both Fluid Imaging Technologies and MIllipore Corp," says Tamra Fakhoorian, president of the chapter.
Samples only need to be about 100 ml in size and may be either fresh water or saline cultures.
Speakers for this one-day algae “hands-on” commercialization workshop at the Doubletree Castle Hotel in Orlando, FL on Friday, June 12, 2009 include:
Barry Cohen/director of the NAA kicking off the event with a warm welcome, a brief history of the NAA, current technologies, and what the future holds for algae commercialization.
Ronald Pate/ Sandia National Laboratories will speak in behalf of the DOE on the OBP's Recovery Act Funding Opportunities.
Kent Peterson/Fluid Imaging CEO will present on its portable FlowCAM® Instrumentation for Research & Monitoring Algae for (digital imaging cell analyzer) for qualitative and quantitative algal analysis including algae taxa identification, concentration levels, algal counts, predator monitoring, colorometric cell viability, and budding observation.
Bob Wheeler/Aquatic Eco-Systems (AES) will present an overview of the 13,000+ products and other services available for the algae industry.
Robin Ore/CEO Femtobeam, LLC will present on her company’s R@D regarding light sources for photosynthesis and advanced photobioreactors. Femtobeam COO, John Blauwkamp will speak about facility designs and the Femtobeam LLC Mass and Energy Balances.
Dr. Barry Rosen/ Director of the Florida Integrated Science Center, “Biological Process of Lipid Formation in algae. Thomas Butler/Optimal Energy Partners will present “Is Butanol the Fuel to Grow from Temperate Wastewater Algae? Mr. Butler states, "Butanol is the new ethanol and algae is the new corn."
Jim Mulry/Guava Technologies/Millipore- will speak on Guava’s cytometric ability to count algal cells, aquatic bacteria, determine viability of cells, identify presence of Chlorophyll A and determine lipid content of algal cells.
Dr. Surajiet Khanna/CEO BARD, LLC will present "The journey of BARD towards algae - the only solution" describing BARD’s advancements on algae production for biofuels and
by-products.
Tamra Fakhoorian/president of the Mid-South Chapter of the NAA will present an overview on emerging algae companies and their production systems across the South.
