Studies Reveal Married Women the Nation's Most Miserable - Does Marriage Make Sense Anymore?

http://www.askheartbeat.com A critical examination of marriage as a social and religious institution, and whether it meets the needs of the modern woman will be the focus of The Sucka Free Dating Talk Show (http://blogtalkradio.com/askheartbeat) with host Deborrah Cooper and guests on Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Pacific. The two most widely held beliefs about women and marriage: (1) that the happiness and security of women is assured by marriage; and (2) that marriage benefits women much more than it does men, will be openly discussed by our panel of experts.
"Studies show that married women have the highest rate of depression of any U.S. population. With women filing more than 70% of the divorces in this country, it seems apparent that having a husband and being married is not a magic potion for women. The large numbers of foreign bride websites which promise a 'traditional wife' draws American and European men by the thousands. Obviously, many men seek traits in a wife that modern American women are not willing or interested in providing!" stated Cooper.
Guest experts on are Charles Orlando, author of The Problem with Women... is Men: The Evolution of a Man's Man to a Man of Higher Consciousness (www.theproblemismen.com), and Tina. B. Tessina, LMFT, Ph.D., author of Money, Sex and Kids: Stop Fighting About the Three Things That Can Ruin Your Marriage (http://www.tinatessina.com), a Redbook Magazine relationship expert who has appeared on both Oprah and Larry King Live. Also on our panel is Wendy Braitman, a happily single woman who blogs regulary about being unmarried on First Person Singular: Notes from an Unmarried Life (http://firstpersonsingular.org).
Dr. Tessina feels that unrealistic expectations may be the key factor to marital unhappiness for women. "A healthy, happy marriage (I've been in one for 27 years) will meet the needs of both husband and wife. The problem with the "modern marriage" is that the expectations are not appropriate for what marriage really is" said Tessina. "We are all infected with media images of romance and celebrity marriage, so that the glamour, spectacle, romance and excitement of it all outweigh the true benefits of healthy marriage: intimacy, partnership and companionship. There's so much research that demonstrates that healthy, happy marriages are good for the physical and mental health of both partners. Let's not succumb to this crazy, modern, narcissistic image of love!"
Charles Orlando's research includes interviews with more than 1600 men and women. His book, written entirely from a man's point-of-view, the interview results, and his own "morally-challenged" youth offers data-driven and anecdotally-based research and observations in a humorous, blunt, tell-all examination of men, their issues, their refusal to change, and how women can "train" them into men that are more sensitive, knowledgeable, loving and... Evolved.
"If men could break out of their caveman mentality and see the perception women have of them—it would be blindingly obvious to them why divorce rates are up, why kids’ grades are down, and why the women they claim to love are taking enough anti-depressants to put even Keith Richards into a drunken stupor!" quipped Orlando.
Cooper added her thoughts: "Historically, marriage has benefitted men. He got a dowry, a virgin, someone to take care of his home, bear his children, provide wifely services, and who felt obligated to please him at all costs. Men seeking a traditional marriage long for a return to the good ole days; modern women eschew such ideals. Women are instead looking for an emotional connection to their husbands, to feel that they have a solid partnership along with his admiration and support. These serious differences in expectations appear to be direct contributors to the high U.S. divorce rate."
