Charly Caldwell of Internet Services Group Sheds Light on New Media and Social Media Practices
Charly Caldwell of Internet Services Group of FL, spoke to the SWFL Public Relations Association about how new media, social media, and search engine optimization have transformed marketing and PR.

Charly Caldwell of Internet Services Group of FL, recently spoke to the FL Public Relations Association about the latest developments in the world of marketing and public relations. If you haven’t yet heard of the terms “new media”, “social media”, and “search engine optimization” (“SEO”), you will soon. These technologies have been transforming marketing and public relations around the globe, leaving many marketing professionals confused and concerned. Without training in these revolutionary technologies they could quickly be left behind in the world of new media. This concern was evident when Caldwell returned from his speaking engagement with a large stack of business cards and e-mails pouring into his in-box.
“I have given many training sessions in the past, but was surprised at the sort of passionate response this subject provoked. These technologies have made the old tried-and-true marketing techniques obsolete and the public relations professionals were eager to learn more about them. It was like seeing a light bulb turn on when I started really getting into the intricacies of new media. That was quickly followed by a look of concern, when many realized they have not been practicing the essential elements that will make it work,” said Caldwell.
So, what is “new media”? It's interactive digital media, which takes the form of blogs, interactive web sites, online newspapers, online forums, and social networks such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. The interactivity and two-way nature of these formats is what distinguishes new media from traditional print media, radio, and television. However, Caldwell points out, many radio and television stations are providing new media interactivity via their web site, Twitter or Facebook.
Caldwell has published the e-book Create Business Now with New Media, which includes a how-to guide for mastering the world of new media and search engine optimization. He highlights the importance of keyword phrases and separates them into the categories of “learn”, “shop”, and “buy” phrases. He also stresses the importance of testing and measuring results and discusses free tools that are available to professionals such as Google Analytics and Mint. In his e-book and his presentation, Caldwell also shares a key to optimizing web sites, which he calls “4-for-1 optimization”. These new techniques have changed the way business is conducted around the world, and have made a huge impact with business owners and marketing professionals here in Southwest FL.
