PROVO UT - On May 28th - 30th employees of Thrive Learning Institute got involved in the local community by organizing and volunteering for the largest Special Olympics event of the year. Mark Keller, a Thrive Learning Institute employee, had great things to say about the Special Olympics Organization.
“It is an organization with a simple clear objective, to bring joy and provide opportunities to athletes that don't usually get the chance to play or compete in sports.”
Competition in the 2009 Special Olympics Utah Summer Games began Thursday morning, and more than 1,300 athletes and coaches are now in Provo from all over the state. It's the largest Special Olympics competition of the year. Cosmo, Brigham Young University's mascot, and even the Utah Jazz bear were in attendance.
There were many events going on throughout each day: On the track, there were the 50 and 100 meter wheelchair races. On the other side of the field, several T-ball games were going on. There's softball too, and soccer. It is a major undertaking to provide a safe and competitive environment for these inspiring athletes.
All these events make for a busy week but that didn't deter Thrive Employee, Mark Keller, who loved being involved with the athletes and getting to know their vibrant personalities.
“I was mostly involved with the soccer program. The unified sports competition was especially good this year with more than 4 games ending in shoot outs. I feel fortunate to work with a company that is so actively giving back to their community.”
A particularly touching moment experienced and inspiring to all in attendances was retold by involved Thrive Employees,“There was a great game where a dominant team, the Dinos, let a team of younger and smaller players win because they knew if would mean a lot to them. Its moments like that, that keep me coming back, you know.”
Employees of Thrive Learning Institute took time off work to donate well over 80 man hours total to organizing the special Olympics and making sure everything ran smoothly and successfully.
When asked about his employer Mark replied, “Thrive is continually looking for meaningful ways to support the community. They really understand that there is more to business than just making money.”
In this economically troubled time when it would be easier to just focus on keeping the bottom line black, Thrive Learning Institute and their generous employees keep their priorities straight by serving first.
