(Free-Press-Release.com) June 25, 2009 -- As per a CNN report “Doctors, health care executives accused of Medicare fraud” dated Wednesday, June 24, 2009, “More than 50 doctors and health care executives have been indicted and dozens of them arrested by the FBI in a $50 million Medicare fraud case centered in Michigan, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.”

As per this CNN report, "The Obama administration is committed to turning up the heat on Medicare fraud and employing all the weapons in the federal government's arsenal to target those who are defrauding the American taxpayer."

In Section 306 of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA), Congress directed DHHS to conduct a 3-year demonstration using RACs (Recovery Audit Contractors) to detect and correct improper payments in the Medicare FFS program. Congress gave CMS the authority to pay each RAC on a contingency fee basis, which is a percentage of the improper payments corrected by the RACs.

As a result of the 3-year RAC Demonstration, RACs succeeded in correcting more than $1.03 billion of Medicare improper payments. Approximately 96 percent of these improper payments were overpayments collected from providers, while the remaining 4 percent were underpayments repaid to providers.
