Northumberland School Goes Back to World War 2

June 28, 2009

Children in a Northumberland school have been transported back to the dark days of World War 2 as part of their learning experience.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) June 28, 2009 -- Lesley- Anne Newman, an antiques dealer from Morpeth has helped to bring the past to life for a group of school children from Welbeck First School in Ashington who are studying World War 2’s Home Front.

Lesley-Anne who runs All Your Yesterdays, an internet based antique business was asked by Wansbeck Education Enterprise Network (WEEN) to put together an interactive session for the pupils from the school. The session was designed so that the children could gain an appreciation of day to day life during World War 2 following a visit to Yorkshire’s Eden Camp.

The 3 hour long session included a talk about evacuees, rationing and air raids. The children were able to see and touch real artefacts from Lesley’s antique collection including gas masks, Air Raid Precautions tin helmets and ration books. In addition, the children created their own evacuation labels, propaganda posters and even designed an air raid shelter. After the session, Lesley loaned the artefacts to the school where a World War 2 museum was set up for the children to enjoy and learn from. Lesley helped set up the museum and the children enjoyed managing the resources at their disposal by preparing museum information packs and showing reception children, parents and grandparents around the living museum after school.

WEEN’s Andy Gaskell was delighted with the session. “The items Lesley brought with her to the classroom really helped the children to understand what life must have been like during the war,” he said. “As Lesley was dressed in a period uniform, the children gained an even greater sense of realism. The enterprise skills demonstrated by the children were excellent as they really made the museum come to life.”

“You can learn so much from things of the past” said Lesley. “I showed the children an evacuee’s suitcase and asked them to consider what it must have been like to leave their family and friends and start life again in the countryside. The children were really switched on and had some very enterprising ideas to enhance the museum.”

Teacher Allison McLean thought that the session and war time items were inspirational for the children. “It’s one thing teaching the children about the past but when they can experience it for themselves it really brings the lesson alive.”
