Somerset, NJ June 29, 2009 – Native Americans are still here. Author Stephanie Duckworth-Elliott lets us know this in her debut Young Adult book, “Poneasequa, The Goddess of the Waters”. The story follows McKenzie Jones, a young girl who is not really into her culture, and her journey to becoming comfortable in her own skin. "This was me,” says Duckworth-Elliott of her upbringing on Martha’s Vineyard. “I didn’t want to be different”.
Noted Native American Author, Joseph Bruchac endorses Poneasequa saying, “It's good to welcome a new Native writer to the field of children's literature, and especially one who speaks so clearly and accurately about the lives of contemporary southern New England American Indians as does Stephanie Duckworth-Elliott.”
