The most precious of all white teas, unopen buds resembling silver needles from the Hunnan province in China. The tea can be picked only two days a year, and gives a soft tasting, creamy & mellow flavour with a pleasent aftertaste. For all these reasons Silver Needle White tea is in demand. One company, Toppers Teas of Sussex is trying the buy local business model to sell the product. Although the tea comes from China, Toppers has used a Sussex Based designer to create the packaging, and a Sussex based printer to print the packaging, and they themselves are based in Sussex. One would suppose this is as Sussex as tea can be, and it pretty much is. However, give global warming 10 years and we might be growing tea in Sussex itself.

Sussex grown tea might be a bit of stretch, but given that the quality of English wines has improved dramatically in the last five years, mainly due to warmer weather, the idea is not that far fetched. So does the buy local business model work with tea? Well given that the packaging does not have to be shipped from another city or country for that matter, it does help the environment. Likewise, business meeting would most likely be held in Sussex reducing travel pollution, and so on. And most important of all people like to support local businesses even in a recession. The lesson learned from Toppers Teas and their Chinese Silver needles is that the buy local business model does not have to be restricted to local produce. Just doing what you can locally will help the environment and the local economy. Imagine the impact if all products even if they were made on the other side of the world, produced their packaging and related services locally where the product was sold. The impact would be massive, both to the environment and to the economy.

British Champagne anyone?
