Walk-in wardrobes have caught on in the UK and out goes the wardrobe with doors as more and more customers are looking for that spacious open look and feel of a walk-in closet
it adds visually value to any bedroom and the overall perceived valve of any property.
However not all walk-in wardrobe are created equal as some are just wardrobes without doors other are all metal just like a wired shopping basket.
A number of things to consider before you buy or invest in a walk-in closet.
Material used to manufacture a walk in closet wardrobe
Solid veneers walk-in closet systems
if you go for solid veneers these can fade in the light, also colour matching is difficult. Say you need a replacement shelf 6 months down the line, can it be matched to what you bought, more so if you have purchase it from a company who imported it from abroad.
I know from experience that this happens a lot even with kitchens, so do your home work as long lead times on getting replacement can be a problem.
MFC Board
supplied by the likes of Egger Boards a very durable board that’s water, heat and scratch resistant.
The key here is to make sure the edges are not edged in anything less than toughened 2mm PVC as this will prevent damage against knocks and bumps and will not peel of like cheap paper edging, so ask the question when buying.
Foil wrapped
This is the one that gets more people, a very thin paper covering that looks good to the eyes but has serious flaws when it come to standing up against wear and tear.
It’s used a lot on kitchen doors but who put anything on top of a kitchen door. Well no one, so it’s ideal for that application, but moving shoes, belt buckles, zips, bags and coat hangers across a walk-in wardrobe cabinet top or shelf this is when it fails. Score and fading appear down the line.
Put a hot cup of coffee on it and brand it with a zero oops don’t bother trying to buy stain removers it’s dead.
Metal work systems
In my option the most regretted purchase and fastest replaced walk-in wardrobe of all.
You might as well buy a bus shelter and hang some pegs on it.
Apart from all the nuts and bolts and having to find a spanner any time you want to adjust a shelf, it looks absolutely hideous, snags on your clothes and sound and feels cheap.
I am sounding like Jeremy Clarkson now.
When you come to sell, there’s a bear room with some poles in it rather than a piece of bedroom furniture that can sell the house on that along. You know how some women are sold on a wardrobe.
All glass shelves systems
Do I have to comment on this? Apart from the safety risks if a child climbs on them or you stumble over a bag unless your husband is a glass cleaner or you fancy the window cleaner stay away from this type of walk-in wardrobe system for the reason mention above.
High maintenance and introducing chemical glass cleaners into your sleeping area is not a good idea and also worth considering avoiding.
Also look out for plastics accessories and avoid as they tend to fall apart and also look cheap like a see through blow up plastic armchair.
Make sure also that replacement parts are available up to 10 years.
Look for adjustability in shelf positions as things chance at a later date and you wish that, if only I could move that shelve up another inch then my life would be complete and all the worlds’ problem would fade away.
