Making Goal Setting Compelling
Making Goal Setting Compelling
Have you set your goals lately? Goal setting can be pivotal to reaching your life aspirations.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) July 26, 2009 --
Goal setting is an effective tool, whether applied to your spiritual, physical, financial or career goals. The main importance of goal setting is that it provides you with direction and purpose. Goal setting can be the key difference between success and failure in reaching your life aspirations.
Studies have suggested that only 5% of adults have written goals which would incur that 95% adults don’t. A study at Yale University on the graduating class of 1953 indicated that of all students, less than 3% had clear written goals. Twenty years later, the remaining ex-students from the class of 1953 were interviewed and it was determined that the 3% who had written goals with a plan attached were worth more in financial terms than the other 97% combined. It was also arbitrarily believed that the 3% overall, were happier, better adjusted and more excited about life.
Goal setting is important and highly effective as it helps to focus energy in a specific direction, as they say, where focus goes, energy flows! It is important to exercise the conscious mind by doing little things each day to move you closer to your desired outcomes, even if it is something really small such as picking up the phone to make that call you have put off for weeks, scheduling an appointment or gaining knowledge on a subject specific to your goal(s).
Incantations, yoga and meditation can be used to propel you towards your goals at a faster rate by tapping into the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind contains a lot of unexposed deeper knowledge of the inner self. Becoming aware of the inner self can shed light on ingrained behavioural patterns which could ultimately be changed to better the ability of an individual to make positive changes in their life.
Goals should be as specific as possible. Goals should be compelling and vivid so you can be clearly visualise and feel what it would be like to have achieved them. Paul Meyer said;
"Crystallize your goals. Make a plan for achieving them and set yourself a deadline. Then, with supreme confidence, determination and disregard for obstacles and other people's criticisms, carry out your plan”.
For example, instead of, “I want to start a home based business and make lots of money”, your goal could be, “I want to start my own home based business in thirty days and make my first sale by 31 September. By 12 December I will recoup the start up costs and in twelve months from now my monthly net income will be enough to enable me to leave my full time job”.
Tips on goal setting:
• Write your goals down and position them so that you can see them everyday. You could for example get some whiteboard markers and write your goals over a full length mirror in your house or create a vision board and place it at the top of your bed head.
• Have monthly, one, two, five, ten and twenty year goals. Circle your one year goals and write a detailed plan as to how you will achieve them. If after several months you find that your goal is unrealistic or no longer what you want, change your plan, i.e. change your goal.
• Follow the SMART system; your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time frame bound.
• Expect set backs and problems and use them as learning experiences. Every time you come across an obstacle think of it as an opportunity to expand your skills, “You must have long term goals to keep you from being frustrated by short term failures”. Charles C. Noble
• Be persistent – don’t give up.
• Journal your success along the way so you can refer back to it and make educated decisions based on past success or failure.
• Combat procrastination and don’t be lazy. Minimise time indulging in time wasters, for example, watching reality TV. Think of what you are forgoing and the affect that your laziness will have on reaching your goals.
• Model other successful people that have achieved what you aspire to achieve.
• Be clear on what the reason is behind you wanting to reach your goal.
“If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes,” Andrew Carnegie.
