Stocks rose in the last two hours of trading on Thursday, January 29, 2004.
The blue chips Dow Jones industrial average wend up 41.92 points (0.40%), at 10,510.29. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index advanced 5.63 points (0.50%) to 1,134.11. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index declined 9.14 points (0.44%) to 2,068.23.
Volume was very heavy, about 1.9 billion shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange and about 2.6 billion shares traded on Big Board.
"We definitely had a big sell-off yesterday that feels a bit overdone," said Peter Dunay, chief market strategist at Wall Street Access. "It's the craziness of expectations. We had very strong earnings, but that was already built into the market. If there is a pullback, it will temper expectations and let the economy, which is pretty strong, catch up to the expectations."
The most active companies were Intel Corp (-0.49), SIRI (-0.05), Cisco Systems (-0.82), Sun Microsystems (-0.24), JDSU (-0.10), Lucent tech (-0.01), Ford (-0.74), Nortel networks (0.31).
Sears, Roebuck (S), -$1.43 to $44.37, said it sees 2004 net income of $3.80-$4.00 per share, excluding accounting changes and the negative carrying cost of remaining legacy debt related to its credit business. First Call's mean estimate was $4.36.
