(WICHITA, KS) Michael J. Wood has had a career many would envy: nearly thirty years of building and managing organizations in various locations around the world, Peace Corps service, teaching at the university level and published author. But, while Wood’s career has had its share of highlights, he has also experienced the seedier side of politics and business and the corruption and greed that has infected so many corporations in today’s world.
Wood’s new novel, the fast-paced “Rise Up The Phoenix”, is the highly accurate and personal portrayal of one young Midwestern executive’s dream of climbing to the top of the corporate ladder. The protagonist’s dreams turn to nightmares as he finds himself entangled in a tightly woven web of corporate greed and political corruption orchestrated by a band of characters straight from the headlines of today. In this tale of life in the fast lane, the author takes us on a journey through the world of international business, the backroom politics of the South, the drug-infused life of a fast-track executive and the sometimes subtle differences between lust and love.
When asked about the origins of the story, Wood is quick to respond: “The book is a work of fiction. Anyone who knows me or who takes the time to research, however, will find that many facets of the story are, indeed, based upon experiences I either lived or witnessed firsthand.”
This is Wood’s debut novel. His previous writing credits include academic and technical pieces and occasional essays for the Charlotte (NC) Observer. He is a frequent speaker on business strategy and corporate ethics and consults with numerous organizations. He is currently Chair of the School of Business at Southwestern College of Kansas.
“Rise Up The Phoenix” is an engaging read for those from all walks of life, especially those who enjoy tales of business or political intrigue, suspense, intensely raw lust, questioning of values and beliefs, or stories of uncomplicated people living complicated lives. In a time when corporate and political corruption appear in headlines nearly daily, “Rise Up The Phoenix” is a must read. (PublishAmerica.com, November 2004, ISBN# 1-4137-4073-1, $19.95)
