FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

A RAINBOW OVER BLACKPOOL

In Blackpool, the town with the largest percentage of gay population in the UK, the Blackpool Rainbow Network has finally secured premises for their much-needed Walk-In Centre. An initial lease for the first 3 months on the shop that is to be converted into the Centre has been signed, and the keys received. Now the volunteer group are seeking as much help as possible from the local gay community in order to get the venture up and running as soon as possible.

As the Gay Capital of the North, Blackpool attracts many hundreds of thousands of gay and lesbian visitors each year, and for many of them this is their first experience of a gay scene. Like a magnet, it attracts both young and old alike, and until now there has been nowhere that these people could readily seek information, help or advice on gay issues.

The Walk-In Centre aims to provide, amongst other things: a safe space, GLBT visitor information, and contact information for all the other GLBT related agencies such as: gay youth projects, refuges for the homeless, HIV, AIDS and sexual-health centres, drug or alcohol addiction organisations, and those concerned with bereavement etc. There will also be counselling available for vulnerable people, advice on safer sex, an anonymous homophobic crime reporting facility, support for people that are unsure of their sexuality or find it hard to come to terms with, and up to date information on civil partnerships.

The Fun Capital of Britain is undergoing its biggest makeover ever with the Blackpool Masterplan already well underway and the likelihood of a Super Casino coming soon. A new promenade and sea defences are to be built, and whole areas of the town will be updated. This year sees the re-location of the famous gay nightclub, The Flamingo, and its associated pub, The Flying Handbag to magnificent new premises. Also this year, the feasibility of Gay Pride events being held here from 2006 is currently being researched.

With the envisaged increase in tourism as a direct result of the re-birth of this famous resort, it is expected there will be some further expansion which may be reflected in an even bigger and better gay scene materialising - and the need for the Blackpool Rainbow Network Walk-In Centre being more than ever.
