GM extends employee pricing plan

The promotion, which had been slated to end Sept. 6, will now last at least another month and apply to most 2005 models as well as some 2006-model-year large SUVs and pickup trucks.

The innovative discounting approach began in June, triggering a 41% surge in sales and an all-time industry record for truck sales at General Motors.
"It's really going to be hard to wean the public off this program," said Dave Healy, analyst at Burnham Securities. "This isn't really a surprise because GM still has lots of leftover models to deal with."
Healy added that he expects GM might carry the promotion, which he calls a "marketing masterpiece," even farther out, combining it with price reductions already slated for its new model lineup.
