Japanese mobile phones equipped with the new Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS) solution are soon going to hit the markets. These mobile phones claim to possess global roaming capability. The A-GPS operation is using an early version of the Secure User Plane for Location (SUPL), a standards based protocol that allows a mobile phone owner to communicate with a location server, which is a standard promoted by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA).



A-GPS solution combines the location information of both GPS and the base stations to provide highly accurate positioning and works on network assistance. It achieves a significant reduction in positioning time and mobile handset power consumption.



According to the recent market research report, “GPS Market Update - 2005” published by RNCOS, the usage of GPS devices in Vehicle Management, stands at 88%, in 2005, ranking Japan as #1. The semiconductors manufactured for Vehicle management through A-GPS are expected to be around 11.3 million for the current financial year (2005-06). The report also forecasts the global GPS market to cross $22billion by 2008. The report indicates that the market will experience highest growth rates outpacing the overall market growth of about 12%, by 2008.



The A-GPS service, in collaboration with other services, has created a service platform for providing new value-added services for consumers, mobile operators and business users who utilize mobile GPS in their daily business.
