The Azzurri came to play against the Ukraine in today's quarterfinal, and, shined without a shadow of a doubt in their 3-0 victory. The excellent displays set from Zambrotta, Gattuso, Cannavarro and company were also complimented by Italy's sleeping giant that has awaken today with two of his signature goals against the Ukraine.
The significance of this is high, because, Luca Toni, not only finished as Serie A's top scorer with 31 goals this season, being the first to surpass the 30 goal mark in 47 years, he is Europe's top scorer awarding with him the ESM Golden Shoe, but, with all this success, he was still scoreless in this world cup despite his exceptional play. A little unlucky at times, and, well marked in this world cup, his talents were being questioned by the media, but, there he was today proving things are crazy after he scores, not only once, but twice.
When Luca Toni gets going, he scores, and becomes consistent. His height and strength gives you memories of Vieri in his prime and makes you feel comfortable with a man of this nature pioneering the attack. Anyone that has watched Serie A soccer this season, has witnessed Toni's incredible scoring touch and understands his capabilities and do not knock out his instant success with the National Team on their road to qualifications of this tournament.
Lippi's faith in this man has paid off and should pay off with more rewards. It was only on March 1, 2006 that Toni scored against Germany in their 4-1 astonishing victory in a pre world cup exhibition match. Although that game was played in Italy, the Azzurri were still very convincing and will have to beat a tough German squad in their home soil in the Semi Final of this World Cup.
The alarm clock rang, and Luca Toni woke up, that can set the tone for the Azzurri to become serious World Cup Champs!
