One Common Unity (OCU) “is an evolutionary call for the human family to Be Peace. A grassroots Washington DC-based non-profit organization, OCU is an ever-evolving inter-generational community of healing artists, spiritual warriors, and peace workers. Regardless of labels, it is our relationship with one another as a human family—and with Mother Earth—that makes us One Common Unity. Drawing inspiration from the progressive spirit of humanity, OCU creates & nurtures sustainable entrepreneurship & human development through a variety of local and global community arts projects, omni-media programming, and peace education services.”

DC Inner City Excitement (DC ICE) “was born following the 2002 Winter Olympic Games by two determined parents living in Southeast Washington, DC: Gwen Bryant and Kanita Harrell. After their children asked why there were so few African-Americans in the Winter Olympic Games, Bryant and Harrell answered by taking action. Inspired by the Olympic successes of Shani Davis, DC ICE was created to provide opportunities for young people to develop character and life skills while engaging in historically inaccessible sports. Overcoming initial resistance from skeptical administrators at their hometown rink in Southeast Washington, DC, the pair recruited former Olympic speedskater Nathaniel Lincoln Mills (“Coach Nat”) to their effort, and quickly found the support they needed. Nurtured by the Friends of Ft. Dupont Ice Arena (FDIA), a 501c non-profit that raises money for the facility’s Kids on Ice (KOI) programs, DC ICE has operated in conjunction with FDIA’s unique Learn to Speedskate program. The KOI program is free to youth and families, including many from surrounding neighborhoods that would otherwise be economically hard-pressed to experience the sport. Despite rigorous 7:00 AM Saturday practices, DC ICE continues to grow. DC ICE has grown from two families to over twenty families in the four years since its inception. In the glare of the Olympic successes of 2006 Olympic Champion Shani Davis—one of Coach Nat’s former pupils—DC ICE is poised to grow exponentially. Seeking to grow beyond once-weekly speedskating practices, a core group of inspired parents have dedicated themselves to building an organization that sustains a year-round, multi-disciplinary program in a historically marginalized community—a program to develop Olympians.”
