ROLLIN’ ROCKIES CELEBRATION TEN YEARS IN COLORADO
The Rollin’ Rockies, Colorado’s only wheelchair softball team, will celebrate its ten-year anniversary this Wednesday, July 19, with a 6:30PM game against a local able-bodied softball team who will compete in wheelchairs at the Rollin’ Rockies softball field located in Coors Field parking lot B7. The event is to bring awareness of the abilities of athletes with disabilities as well as celebrate a ten years of success for wheelchair softball in Colorado.
The sport was developed over 30 years ago in the Midwest and follows the same rules as set forth by the ASA with a few exceptions geared toward the wheelchair. Since its inception in 1976, the sport has been governed by the National Wheelchair Softball Association which hosts a national tournament each year.
Wheelchair softball found its way to Colorado in 1996 and quickly found a sponsorship deal with the Colorado Rockies Baseball Club. In the ensuing years, the sport would grow to include a league of four nationally-ranked teams from Boulder to Colorado Springs. Today, only one team exists and the Rollin’ Rockies are gearing up for a regional tournament in Omaha later this month and the National Wheelchair Softball Tournament in Chicago this August 9-12.
