Small business owners have made up many excuses as to why their businesses are not blogging. Here are the top 5 excuses and why small businesses need to start blogging right away:
Myth #1) "Blogs are only for individuals."
Technorati.com currently tracks about 50 million blogs, about 10% of which are commercial or business blogs. Yes, the majority of bloggers are love sick teenagers, or others writing on their views of the world, but with over 5 million business already blogging, one can not afford to have a competitor blog and you not.
Myth #2) "The business of blogging is only for big businesses."
While smart business powerhouses like Microsoft, IBM, and NBC have been blogging for a while, big business still does not "get it."
In a survey done this year, it was discovered that only 5% of the Fortune 500 companies had blogs. Blogging today is where the internet was 10 years ago. First movers will have major advantages. A smart small business could join the blogosphere today, whereas it still may take years for a large competitor to finish analyzing whether or not to blog.
Myth #3) "I can't blog, I'm not a good writer."
One of the major advantages small businesses have over their larger competitors is they are perceived to have personalities, hearts and souls. All one needs to do is write a few paragraphs for each blog entry. Be personal, write like you are sending a letter to friends, not formal, stuffy business jargon entries. This will make your customers further identify with you.
Myth #4) "Business Blogs are boring."
Blogs are only as boring as one makes them. Our blog is http://terracottainn.blogspot.com We write about our dog, celebrities, our resort, what it is like going to a clothing optional resort for the first time, etc.
Other businesses, like a restaurant for instance, could write about special parties they have hosted, anniversaries, birthdays, customers pets, sport teams they sponsor, special meals, etc.
Myth #5) "I'm to busy to blog."
If a business is on the internet, then it needs a blog. Go to blogger.com or wordpress.com and in 10 minutes time, you can set up your blog. It's that easy. Add at least an article a week. Make sure you tell your customers about your blog. You will be glad you started one and your customers will be glad that you did.
