Joe Rogan is rich and happy and stoned. These three things don't always go together. But Rogan's not one of those self-destructive or angry short-timer comedians, though he has known a few.
"[Sam] Kinison was the best example. The fame and the money and the girls pulled all the life out of him," Rogan says. "His comedy was based on the struggle -- the struggle was the fuel, the struggle for love, the struggle for acceptance. And then once he got it, he was just on fumes."
Then there was Mitch Hedberg. Rogan and Doug Stanhope were hosting Comedy Central's "The Man Show" when Stanhope got a call that Hedberg might lose a heroin-ed, gangrenous leg. That report didn't pan out, but Hedberg died soon after.
"And it was so sad, because it was like, ---damn, you know where this is going. This s--- never ends good."
But Rogan, 39, thinks we need better perspective on individual self-destruction. Way worse is society's political and religious conflict, because it messes up the whole world, he says.
"Russia is selling arms to Iran now? Whoa," says the former "NewsRadio" star. "Dude, this is a scary-ass little world we live in, and we're at the helm of this bitch. But we're sittin' here going to Wal-Mart and drinking our Starbucks and driving our minivans."
