For_Immediate_Release:
You may want to think twice before putting George Bush in your next movie. Following CNN's and NPR's refusal earlier this week to run commercials for Death of a President, now NBC and the CW are refusing to allow ads for this weekend's limited release of the Dixie Chicks documentary Shut Up & Sing. While NBC has explicitly stated the presidential disparagement as the reason for its rejections, the CW has kept mum. The spot for the Barbara Kopple-directed documentary begins with lead singer Natalie Maines' comments about her shame that Bush is a fellow Texan, shows Bush's rebuttal after the Chicks' CD sales dropped ("They shouldn't have their feelings hurt just because some people don't want to buy their records when they speak out."), and Maines' esponse that Bush is a "real dumb (bleep)." The Weinstein Company's Harvey Weinstein told Variety, "It's a sad commentary about the level of fear in our society that a movie about a group of courageous entertainers who were blacklisted for exercising their right of free speech is now itself being blacklisted by corporate America."
