Japanese fibre output fell by 7.0% or 99,000 tons during 2003, compared with the 2002 figure. The main contributor to the overall decline was a 73,000 tons fall in staple fibre production. In this sector, output totalled only 750,000 tons in 2003, some 8.9% lower than the 823,000 tons recorded for 2002. Declines were recorded in staple fibre made from almost all of the main polymer types. The only type to show any increase was nylon. But even in this case the rise (1,000 tons) was small relative to the overall decline in staple fibre output (73,000 tons).
