In celebration of Women’s History Month, Onyx Woman Magazine, a business magazine for women of color is pleased to announce their 2007 women of the year. Dr. Sharon McDaniels-Lowe, founder of A Second Chance, a nonprofit organization that promotes kinship foster care, and Bev Smith the host Sheridan Broadcast Network’s, The Bev Smith Show have been chosen for their contributions and impact on social change in the African-American community. Both women have been acknowledged as influential role models to many women in pursuit of excellence. They have also knocked down barrier and built bridges for other women to cross.
Starting as an eight page newsletter 13 years ago, Onyx Woman Magazine not only documents the success of women of color, but also guides women through the maze of entrepreneurship and the journey up the corporate ladder. Publisher, Ola R. Jackson says, “Even today black women yearn to be exposed to mentors, even if they are silent mentors…those women who they do not know personally, but still feel connected to in a way that inspires them to pursue their own endeavors.
