Denmark is to host a UN summit in 2009 where a follow-up treaty to the Kyoto protocol was to be adopted, Danish news agency Ritzau reported Wednesday, citing official sources.

Later Wednesday, Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Environment Minister Connie Hedegaard were slated to present the plans, Ritzau said.

Some 10,000 delegates were expected at the summit, due 10 years after the Kyoto meeting was held.

The 1997 Kyoto treaty sets legally binding targets for developed countries to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases blamed for global warming by 2012 compared with 1990 levels.

European Union leaders recently stated that a new global treaty on emission reductions was necessary by 2009 at the latest in order to be in place when the Kyoto treaty expires at the end of 2012.
