During the tail end of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed the consecutive Best Picture winners A Letter to Three Wives and All About Eve, while his brother Herman – after co-writing a little film called Citizen Kane - busied himself with scripts like Pride of the Yankees and The Pride of St. Louis.
With today’s news that director Christopher Nolan’s brother Jonathan has been hired by Steven Spielberg to script Interstellar, it would seem that a modern day version of this director-writer brother combo is taking hold. Until now, Jonathan has only been writing scripts for his older brother by six years - Memento, The Prestige and next summer’s Gotham sequel, The Dark Knight.
The subject of Interstellar is apparently one that fascinates Spielberg, further cemented by his recent attendance at a Cal Tech workshop on the subject of Wormholes headed up by the institute’s relativity expert, Kip Thorne. But before he can get to Nolan junior’s script, Spielberg has Indiana Jones 4 and his long awaited Abraham Lincoln biopic, with Liam Neeson in the lead role.
That suits Nolan’s schedule, as it turns out. Although he just recently completed his script for The Dark Knight, there will no doubt be more work required there; and separately, he is lining up The Chicago Fire for Warner Bros.
