The Father of Twentynine Palms Mural Preserved

Twentynine Palms – Action Council for 29 Palms is pleased to announce the cleaning and preservation of the Father of Twentynine Palms mural.

The Father of Twentynine Palms mural depicts Dr. James B Luckie, who spearheaded the early growth of Twentynine Palms. Dr. Luckie directed patients who suffered the effects of mustard gas to the area shortly after World War I.

Wayne Winiecki, who is gaining worldwide recognition for his mural restoring and preservation abilities, reported the completion of the mural on April 27, 2007. The mural is displayed at 6175 Adobe Road on the 29 Palms Eye Care Clinic, and was first dedicated May 6, 1995.

Local businesses Granite Construction and Superior Ready Mix funded the cleaning and preservation of the Father of Twentynine Palms mural. Granite Construction and Superior Ready Mix share an aggregate and recycling facility, East of Twentynine Palms on highway 62.

To the credit of artist Don Gray, who selected quality paints, the Father of Twentynine Palms mural has held up incredibly well. Winiecki conducted an extensive cleaning, which removed about twelve years of environmental sediment. He also added several coats of a preserving agent over the mural, which helped to bring out much of its original shine.

Winiecki is quickly becoming known for his efforts; he will leave shortly for Bishop California, where his expertise has been requested. Winiecki will also attend next year’s global mural conference in Sheffield Tasmania, where he will share his knowledge with the world mural community, Chairman Ray Kinsman noted.
