If villains didn't have these poor pawns to use as hero bait, would our super studs rescue anyone else at all? Here's a look at some comic heroes and their significant others:
SUPERMAN/CLARK KENT
Girlfriend: Lois Lane »
Romantic history: Lois falls for the hero and puts off bumbling Kent, but eventually she figures out the ruse and marries him. In fact, they've been married twice -- each time in an alternate universe.
"Save me!": Under the constant personal protection of the most powerful man in the universe, Lois has been rescued from every imaginable peril, from merely falling out of a window to terrorist attacks to alien abductions. In a mere three films, how often did we suffer Margot Kidder's strangled yelps for help?
WONDER WOMAN/ PRINCESS DIANA
Boyfriend: Steve Trevor »
Romantic history: Army pilot Steve crashed on the Amazons' island, and a smitten Diana followed him home. They married in the '80s.
"Save me!": He's a decorated Army officer, but Wonder Woman sure has to save Steve's butt a lot -- including nursing him to health when he crashed on her secret island. Steve has even died and been resurrected twice.
BATMAN/BRUCE WAYNE
Girlfriend: Vicki Vale »
Romantic history: Photographer Vicki flirted with Batman a while, then disappeared. She returned, married to someone else, then disappeared again. She returned -- Marriage? What marriage? -- dated Bruce Wayne again, then ran off with another guy.
"Save me!": In the comics, one of Wayne's jealous ex-lovers tries to drown her, but he saves her. And just think of Jack Nicholson's Joker trying to test his acidic cosmetics on Kim Basinger's Vale visage.
SPIDER-MAN/PETER PARKER
Girlfriend: Gwen Stacy »
Romantic relationship: In the comics, the first gal in Spidey's web was this blonde co-ed. The Green Goblin used her as bait to lure Spider-Man, then he killed her by tossing her off the Brooklyn Bridge. Mary Jane Watson was a mutual friend of Peter and Gwen; their grief over Gwen's death began their bond.
"Save me!":Spidey tried to save her, but she was already a goner. Not to fear: An insane villain later creates a Gwen clone.
THE HULK/BRUCE BANNER
Girlfriend: Betty Ross Banner
Romantic relationship: Betty's dad was in charge of the science project that turned Bruce a bit green. They flirted, Bruce went on occasional rampages. She married someone else, but they divorced. Eventually, she and Bruce married. She was poisoned, frozen, revived, and her whereabouts are now unknown.
"Save me!": At one point, Betty was transformed by the villainous Modok into a gamma-empowered flying menace known as the Harpy.
THE FLASH/WALLY WEST
Girlfriend: Linda Park
Romantic relationship: Another female reporter, this Korean-American becomes friends and eventually the wife of West.
