No longer is just DNA or fingerprints the only means of identification for children or adults. Our teeth have a critical identification marker that is just as unique to an individual as fingerprints are. In the case of a fire, flood, natural disaster, or accident, fingerprints may not be available to identify a person, but on the other hand, the enamel on our teeth is the hardest substance in our body, making them extremely resilient to water, fire, and outdoor elements. Knowing this, a pediatric dentist developed a thermoplastic wafer that essentially makes a permanent record of an individuals teeth. Not only does it record the individual characteristics of each tooth, but also records the upper and lower jaw alignment, as well as the position of the teeth within the jaw. The saliva is deposited on the wafer during the impression and adds a possible DNA sample as well as a strong scent of the individual for scent tracking dog purposes.
“A need for identification goes way beyond just child abductions. There are many reasons that a child or an adult may need to be identified and visual identification is not always possible.” says Kelly Boley, a registered Dental Hygienist in Colorado. She goes on to add, “Much precious time can go by waiting for DNA results leaving the families of victims anxious. Having an impression of your teeth is imperative for every person to have. The tooth impression provides priceless information.”
These impressions are simple and very easy to perform at home. For more information visit: www.YourChildsId.com
