With over 30,000 views on youtube alone and a huge reaction from myspace and other web 2.0 sites, this low-budget, low-fi film clip is causing quite a stir.
The video is a little left of centre and breaks tradition for the country genre, as it’s largely made up of fan footage sent in from around the world, via the web.
The song tells the story of a shy, introverted high school girl, who grows up to be beautiful, confident woman, ala “the ugly duckling” fairytale.
Via websites set up specifically for the idea, fans were asked to send in photos from when they were younger and then film themselves as they are now.
“The idea is that beauty isn’t all about what’s on the outside – but more about who you are and how you feel, and the growth from THEN to NOW”, says O’Shea, who is now based in Nashville, TN.
“We got videos from mothers with children, skinny kids who ended up huge, huge kids who ended up skinny, and a couple of individuals who had some pretty serious dental work done!”
With a total budget of $500, it’s indicative of the “new music model” which is dictating that labels and artists get more bang for their buck.
And now itting on a playlist, next to big budget productions from Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunn and Kasey Chambers, O’Shea it certainly getting his money’s worth.
