Tuesday, April 29 -- A law signed into effect by Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty would fund a study and inquiry into the unusually high rate of mesothelioma among Iron Range mine workers.
The new legislation provides $4.9 million in funds for the study, which will be headed by the University of Minnesota. The research is expected to take place over several years.
Mesothelioma is a highly dangerous, rare, but fatal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, which attacks the mesothelial linings of the lungs, chest, and abdominal cavity. Workers in the construction, shipbuilding, and mining industries are among those at highest risk of asbestos exposure.
The industrial use of asbestos has been heavily regulated for years. Even now, companies are still being held responsible for their negligence in exposing their employees and their employees' families to this dangerous substance.
