Odessa, Texas - Anne Nason's book "God's Unwanted Angels" is getting attention from animal welfare advocates in the United States. Nason lives in an area that's not considered "pet friendly," and wrote her book to make an often uncaring public more aware of the cat overpopulation crisis and to raise funds for cats in shelters and feral colonies. 500,000 pets are relinquished to shelters in Texas every year; animals that for the most part are healthy and adoptable, and she wants to see that change.

Best Friends Animal Society in Utah learned of Nason's book and contacted her for an interview. The story appears on their website. "Best Friends has accomplished so much for animals since they were founded, I was pleased that they ran the story. They're a lot closer to achieving their goal of "No More Homeless Pets" than many people realize." She said. Best Friends is able to accomplish so much because they have an extensive network of volunteers across the country to coordinate community efforts. Olga Dvornikova of Best Friends Network referred to Nason's book as "A labor of love for homeless cats."

Nason believes that humane education is essential if humans are to change the way they think about and treat animals. She would like to see humane education programs in public schools because if children are taught compassionate care of animals, they'll be more responsible as adults. She feels that this would also be a deterent to some of the violent crimes against animals, and would like to see tougher anti cruelty laws enacted nationwide.

"It's gratifying to hear about shelters with high adoption rates or programs that are working and humanely reducing the cat overpopulation." She said. "I really believe that with enough involvement, we can be a "no kill" nation."
